Intent
At Kingsfield, our mathematics curriculum is designed to enable children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to reason mathematically and to solve problems. It aims to ensure that children are able to recognise the importance of mathematics in the wider world and that they are able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in a range of different contexts. We aim for children to enjoy mathematics, to experience success in the subject.
Implementation
At Kingsfield, our children take part in daily mathematics lessons covering a broad and balanced curriculum including elements of number, calculation, geometry, measures and statistics. Alongside daily maths sessions, an additional maths meeting is held each day to build fluency with number. Where possible and appropriate, we teach maths in a cross curricular manner as well as discretely in order to develop the practical application of mathematical skills. We focus on mathematical methods, mathematical vocabulary and mastery to broaden and deepen mathematical understanding.
Enrichment
At Kingsfield, our mathematics curriculum is enriched by making connections between aspects of mathematics usually met separately. We plan creative approaches to topics, including open-ended investigations and exploit opportunities to use mathematics across all subject areas, including mathematics of particular relevance to the children and their locality. We further enhance our curriculum through the use of visits and visitors within school.
Outcomes
At Kingsfield, our children leave us with the necessary mathematical skills to equip them to be secondary ready. They are able to quickly recall facts and procedures and have the flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics. Our children have the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics and can demonstrate a skill in multiple ways, using mathematical language to explain their ideas.
Multiplication Check
In Year 4, children undertake a multiplication check. This is to see how well they know and can recall at speed their times table facts.
As this is a new test, the government has issued guidance for parents on how the check will be administered.
Don't forget that we have TT Rockstars and we use this to support children at home and in school.
